3D Printing for Footwear

The process of making shoes involves creating molds or lasts to fit the shape of the shoe and the insole. Creating the shoe lasts by traditional milling machines is a difficult and time-consuming process, due to the curved organic shape of the foot. A 3D printer can accurately replicate the shoe last model from CAD design which can be used in production. This greatly reduces the labor cost and improves productivity. Different shapes or shoe sizes can be readily fabricated simply by adjusting the CAD file.

With the development of flexible 3D printing materials, various startups and large companies have explored 3D printing as an option to produce customized footwear. This includes Nike's light-weight high-performance running shoes, or 3D-printed custom shoe insole for treatment of foot pain.
